Don’t Fear the Flip

Many swimmers fear the flip.  It’s easy to allow flip turns to overwhelm you: they’re quick, near a wall, and can involve water going up the nose if you forget to blow out your nose.

I really enjoy this flip turn video, however, I think it misses a very important first step.  Prior to tackling the steps put forth in this video, I advice practicing flips in the water away from the wall.  This allows you to practice flipping and practice breathing without the potential of hitting the wall.

  • 200 swim
  • Swim to the middle of the pool
  • 8 x 50 kick
  • 8 x 50 drill
  • 8 x 50 swim
  • Repeat
  • Swim back to the wall
  • 8 x 75 pull
  • 8 x 75 drill
  • 8 x 75 swim
  • Repeat
  • 200 easy
